What is Your Frog?

For starters, I am going to recommend you read the book Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy. This book talks about an amazing concept that will increase your self discipline.

I am going to talk about the concept that the book is based on, but I still want you to read the full book. There is always more to a book than just getting a summary and you never know what sentence could change your life.

In the book, Brian Tracy explains a concept called eat that frog. This is a theory that if you wake up and do the thing you want to do the LEAST in your day immediately, you will be happier and a more productive person. He calls this "eating your frog". The whole point is if you had to wake up each day and eat a frog at some point in the day, when would be the best time to do it? If you wake up and think, "I'll do it tonight" then you must go through the rest of the day thinking about eating that frog. Everything you do through the day would be tainted by the fact that you must go home and eat a frog and it would kill the joy in your day. So, Brian says the best time to "eat the frog" is first thing in the morning. You get it over with and can go about your day with no stress or worry about eating the frog later.

With this concept, you must determine what your frog is and if you have multiple, what the biggest one is. Past that, you start your morning by right off the bat eating your biggest frog.

For me, I have accepted that my biggest frog is working out and weirdly enough I love to work out. The thing is though, I am naturally a very lazy person. It is something I really battle in life and constantly must push myself past to not be this way. I swear, if I can work out every day, you can too. I have done a body building competition, was in three sports, and love to be active, but it is still very hard for me to motivate myself to do it consistently. So, I try to wake up and workout first thing every single day. If I wait until later, I find I usually talk myself out of it, make excuses as to why it’s okay if I don't, or my day gets busy, and I do not prioritize it.

This is my biggest frog, and while it doesn't happen every time, because life does get in the way, 95% of the time it is the first thing I do in the morning. After I have my workout done, I feel like the rest of the day is mine to do what I want with. I have gotten my biggest task done and now it is on to the smaller more manageable frogs that I must eat.

I understand this might be different for you. You may have no problem hitting the gym later in the day and it is easy for you to workout whenever you get the chance. The point is to find your biggest frog, what is something that you know you need to do but always find a reason around it?

What would doing this task everyday do for you?

How would it move you forward?

How would it change your life?

Imagine if you got that one task that you always put off out of the way every single day.

This way, you live each day with the peace in your mind knowing you finished the biggest hardest task on your list. I can tell you from experience, this will kill so much anxiety in your life. Whenever I do not get my workout done first thing, I go through the day stressing over getting it done and often talking myself out of doing it. This is self-destructive and a huge waste of mental energy, stop wasting your mental energy on arguments with yourself. Do not give yourself the option or chance to make excuses and compromise, because 90% of the time you will choose wrong.

Try this with that one thing you know you need to get done and constantly bail on. I promise it will change your life and you will find consistency. It will take time and will be hard at first, but it will bring big results and completely change your mind set. Figure out what your biggest frog is and crush it first thing in the morning.
