Something I have learned over the past year that has been valuable is to think about the feeling I will have after I finish something.
I know that doesn't make much sense so let me explain.
Often when we have a large task or something we must get done but do not want to do we get really fixated on how we must do that task. We get all wrapped up in how we hard it is to get going and how we don't want to do it.
Then, inevitably, we put it off until we have absolutely no choice but to get it done.
This causes us stress, anxiety, and usually some half assed work.
I am the BIGGEST culprit of this, because I love a deadline and I love crunch time.
Although, over the past year I have found a really great way to get my ass in gear to get things done sooner rather than later.
When I have something I need to do and have been putting off, I imagine the feeling I will have AFTER I get it done.
You see, actions follow focus. Whatever we focus on odds are our brains will start working to get it.
So, if we focus on how good it feels to finish the task, and how less anxious we will be if it is no longer a problem, our brains will naturally want to get started on it.
For example, this morning I had to get up and finish my last school assignment. The whole morning, I was telling myself “You can go back to bed it is not due until Monday". Although, once I decided that I did not want to spend all today and tomorrow stressing about it, I got it done.
I thought about how good it would feel to just be done with it and not worry about it anymore and immediately wanted to just go finish it.
Actions follow focus.
I am not perfect at this by any means, but it has helped me a ton over the past year and is transferable to any situation in life.
Next time you are struggling to get something done give this mind set switch a try.
