Learning To Take Your Time

Patients is something I battle with. Growing up in the world of technology and ease, patients has not been a skill I have had to practice often.

In today’s world everything comes fast, and if it doesn't you look for what does. In many ways this is great, but it is also destructive. Our generation does not know how to stick with things. We do not understand the concept that continual slow growth builds the most amazing things, we only understand what we want here and now. This is a problem.

I have realized my tolerance to stick with things is extremely low. The other day I thought about quitting a workout in middle of it just because the step ups were taking too long. While I did not do this, the fact that a 15-minute chunk of a workout is considered not fast enough to me is crazy. This is the way the world has conditioned our minds, if it is not immediate results you move on.

I believe this will be the biggest roadblock to our goals in the future. We all believe the successful people we see on social media became successful in a day. This is simply not true, they have put in years of hard work, time, and effort and you are finally seeing the result.

We always want the reward before the work. It is human nature, but if you can just hold off, avoid the temptation of the small rewards, you will realize the real prize is in the wait. The real trophy is in the process and the patients of not giving into small gratifications.

I am still far from where I should be, I constantly break and re-evaluate, but I have realized there is a way to get better. I have noticed that the more time-consuming things I do, the better I get at learning to wait. I have shown my mind the product of patients and it has slowly gotten better at recalling the better reward.

MIND YOU THIS IS NOT A ONE TIME THING. I have been doing these things for over three years now and am just starting to notice real results. This takes time. Will it take you as long as it has taken me to get to the same point? Maybe. Maybe not.

The point is this skill of learning to stick with things, being okay with the fact that things take time, and loving the process can be built. The problem is, it is not something you can order on amazon prime and get tomorrow.

Once we all accept that fact, we can get started on putting the time in.

You will never understand this concept until you realize there is no other option, and some things just take time and trust.
