Lately I have realized I love systems. I love creating new ways to make something go faster and I love when a system runs effectively and smoothly.
If you look around at your life, you will realize that we all create systems whether we know we are or not. I bet you have a system for getting up in the morning, going to bed at night, and for other things you do throughout the day. Even if you haven't knowingly created one, your life is full of patterns. We all do things over and over without even realizing we are doing them. Although, if you were to take apart your day from start to finish, I am sure you would notice a few.
They can be very small to very big things that you do consistently without any thought. For example, I always put water on my toothbrush before brushing my teeth. I am sure many of you do this too. This is what I mean by repetitive systems we run that get us through life and create the life we are living. We all have them, but we rarely focus on how well these systems are working for us.
Unless prompted by a large event, usually we just keep doing the same things because when we question them our response is, "well that is just the way I've always done it". We often learn from what we have seen and if you have watched everything your family does, I am sure you do just about the same things they do, whether you want to admit it or not. We often do not think of these factors in our life systems though. I know I didn't until I started really focusing on self development.
I believe the biggest roadblock to success is the lack of auditing our systems and aligning them with positive habits.
To create success for yourself you need to understand how you work as a person. You need to take your day apart and look at the systems you are running to see how effective they are. This way you can adjust and create new systems that are more set up for you to be successful.
For example, I have done 75 Hard two times now and I believe it helped me subconsciously audit my systems. Doing 75 Hard I realized that I really enjoy having my evenings to relax. I am naturally someone who will do fun things first and would rather chat it up with family than get my tasks done.
Realizing this about myself, I started to make sure I got everything on my list done as early as possible. I wake up around 5 am almost every day and workout first thing.
Does this mean I am someone who enjoys getting up at 5 am? Nope.
But I know for a fact I would rather get up and get my shit done than give up getting to relax at the end of the night and do whatever I want.
Knowing this about myself I have created a system that works around this. I rarely miss a workout and I am usually ready to relax and hang out by 7 every night. There are many things in-between this time that still need work, but this is just an example of how the correct system can often be what is in- between you and your goals. Now that I have started to realize this in life, I have been going through all the areas I want to work on and auditing my systems around those things.
My current biggest system project is my finances. I am very bad about monitoring and understanding my outcome and income. I want to improve this especially if I plan to be running my own business. To be honest it is an area I really lack confidence in, so I tend to avoid it. Although, with the right system in place I will gain confidence and start to manage that area of my life better.
Once you start to become aware of how you are running and managing your systems you can start to modify and improve them. I think people focus too much on making these huge changes and start these crazy new diets that have no correlation to who they are as a person. This is setting yourself up to fail. You must understand who you are as a person and work with the hand you have been dealt.
For example, another thing I have noticed, now that I have been looking, is that I have the hardest time sticking to a diet when I am around people. I tend to go with the crowd or eat while I socialize. I also think I will snack more because I watch other people snacking and feel I need to as well. This is another area in life I currently have no system for. I just go to a get together and eat the whole damn time cause why not. So, in response to this, I am going to try to realize how I am as a person and create a system that will lead me to success.
You must first understand yourself before you can ask yourself to change. Our brains are extremely smart, and they love a good running system. Try focusing on your systems and your habits this week. Are they working together to create a successful outcome? Or are you forcing a system that will never work with your habits as a person.
