Today we celebrated my dad’s 60th birthday as well as my college graduation.
Before the party though, we went to church and there was a great sermon.
The reading was about Jonah and the whale and how God wanted him to save the city of Nineveh.
If you have not heard or read this before, God asks Jonah to save the city of Nineveh, but he refuses and tries to run away. A whale then swallows him while he is at sea and takes him to Nineveh anyway to carry out Gods plan. He then goes and changes the sinning ways of the people as God asked him to do.
With this reading, the priest today talked about change and repentance.
He explained how we resist change and how repentance is about thinking beyond our usual ways of thinking.
It made me think about how life can change so fast without you even noticing it.
I am done with school and starting a career and my dad is retired and entering a new era as well.
Both are different, and both will be hard, but it is time for a change.
Just like the people of Nineveh, Jonah was sent to ask them to change, repent, go past their old ways of thinking, and start something new.
This is the way God wants us to move through life as well.
First, we need to understand that change will be hard, then we need to think about and accept the past, so we are then allowed to repent and move forward.
Life is always moving, at the end of the day it’s just a matter of how fast you are willing to jump into the next adventure.
We are both on our way to something new and exciting.
I know it.
Happy Birthday dad.
